Back in February 2012, AION was switched from a subscription-based system to the free-to-play model. This change meant an awful lot to those who really couldn’t afford the payout each month to start. Now there are no monthly fees or other costs for registration. The world of Atreia and all its regions is open for you to explore. You can go on quests, chose any playable classes, all specializations, and all instances are available to you.

As a new player, there are only a few limitations that will affect you, and that revolves around trading and chatting with others. You can always upgrade your account and enjoy AION to its full extent: with a Gold Pack, you unlock all the game functionality. There are even really neat things to look forward to, like bonuses of higher rewards or the opportunity to visit the instances more frequently.
